I’m a bit new to this and have had trouble applying these ideas to my table of contents — perhaps because mine is un-numbered? I’m using the book (AMS) document class and have tocloft, and as of now, the “part” and “chapter” entries in the table of contents are set to the same indentation level. I want to make things more obvious and have the “part” entries not indented, but the “chapter” entries intended a bit. Is there any way to do this? I’ve tried throwing some things into the Preamble that I thought might work, but I keep getting error messages about “}” not being there, or there being too many.

##The Preamble In this example, the ‘’ file is the root document and is the tex file that will draw the whole document together. The first thing we need to choose is a document class. The article class isn’t designed for writing long documents like thesis’ so we’ll choose the report class, but we could also choose the book class. We can also change the font size by adding square brackets into the \documentclass command and specifying the size. We’ll choose 12pt. Let’s also prepare the document for images by loading the graphicx package. We’ll also need to tell LaTeX where to look for the images using the \graphicspath command, as we’re storing them in a separate folder. The start of our preamble now looks like this:
